Schutz Named Associate Dean for Faculty

On June 1, Professor Anthony Schutz was named Associate Dean for Faculty. In an email to faculty and staff, Dean Moberly said this of the appointment, “Anthony is an exceptional colleague, a well-regarded teacher, and a thoughtful scholar.” Professor Schutz has a twenty-year history with the College of Law, beginning with his time as an extraordinarily successful student, graduating with Highest Distinction and named the 2003 Woods & Aitken Outstanding Student Award. After graduation, his work ethic continued through his work first as an adjunct faculty member while he clerked for the Honorable Arlen C. Beam on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and then as a full-time professor over the past fourteen years. “His understanding of, and appreciation for, the College of Law and the faculty, students, and staff make him a great fit for the role of Associate Dean. I look forward to having him on the College’s administrative team as we confront the difficult challenges of the next two years,” said Moberly.
The product of a farm family in Elwood, Nebraska, Professor Schutz’s research interests includes the often intertwined subjects of agricultural law, environmental and natural resources law, and state and local government. Professor Schutz has served as the chair of the AALS Section on Agricultural Law, is active in the American Agricultural Law Association, and is a frequent lecturer on agricultural and water law issues. He consults frequently with members of the Nebraska Unicameral on these issues, as well as state constitutional issues. He is a co-author of the well-regarded treatise, The Nebraska State Constitution: A Reference Guide, and articles appearing in, among other places, the Drake Journal of Agricultural Law, the Notre Dame Journal of Legislation, the Texas A&M Law Review, the Fordham Environmental Law Review, and the Nebraska Law Review
As Associate Dean for Faculty, Professor Schutz’s responsibilities will include mentoring untenured faculty, focusing on helping the College faculty incorporate technology and remote teaching techniques into their pedagogy where appropriate, and working to increase the amount and quality of the Law College’s scholarship and research.
Professor Schutz follows Professor Eric Berger as Associate Dean. Dean Moberly appreciated the time and efforts Professor Berger brought to the table as Associate Dean, stating, “I am extremely grateful for Eric’s service over the last four years and I applaud him for his tremendous and successful work on behalf of the College. I have immense confidence that Anthony will step seamlessly into this role and help the College thrive going forward.”
